Cro Magnons- 3 of 4 by orinocou
Cro Magnons- 3 of 4
More mixing of traditional and digital. Am less happy with this one but what ya gonna do. The main idea is how the improved hunting methods allowed for a bigger population. And so the human race grows!

I've finally got a name for it- that feeling of intimidation in the face of college educated artists. The feeling that, because my artistic knowledge was mostly gained outside the classroom, it can never truly measure up to people who went to a four year and got a degree. It dogged me for years, the sense that I wasn't "allowed" to make "real" art and so stayed away from showing my stuff and even from entering art supply stores.

It's called being a bastard. An artistic bastard.

Pretty mean, but don't misunderstand. I am not using this term to describe anyone but myself. Self taught artists abound and flourish in careers everywhere. But for myself, this feeling of being illegitimate, suddenly I've got a label to put with the feeling. Like my thoughts aren't good enough, my work doesn't count and my application for the Artist Card has been denied. But even by my own rules, its inaccurate. If going to art school makes you a "legitimate artist" (which it totally does not) then I'm doing it. I'm doing the art school thing right now. But deep in my heart, the bastard idea persists. I have a strange sense of peace about it. Giving it a name is the first step towards acceptance, maybe.

If you ever feel like this, then let's set the record straight. You become a full, legitimate artist the moment you call yourself that. No one needs to give you permission. Produce work. Keep going. You are allowed to make art. Allow yourself to make art.

Lessons its taken me 30 years to learn and am still learning.

Every art history text starts with the Cave of Lascaux, 15 to 30 thousand years ago. I included cave paintings in this series about composite tools because early man's choice to almost exclusively depict game animals underlines the hunting culture they had going on. Think about it. There really aren't cave paintings of turtles or butterflies or mice. I guess we can only guess at what the real meanings of the paintings were.

Truthfully, though? I just wanted to try my hand at cave art. I love this period of history.

First of a series of images about the invention of composite tools by early modern humans. Done for school.

FF6 20th Anniversary by orinocou
FF6 20th Anniversary
On this day, 20 years ago, my brother brought back Final Fantasy III from the store and played it all night. It was raining. A day or two later, I got to play, and its been a part of my life ever since. Pretty sure my fan card has been revoked by now, for the lack of attention I've been giving it lately. Still, I haven't forgotten. And I love it so.

Oh my gosh, my brother and sister just started playing FFVI for the fiftieth time this weekend when I found your Final Fantasy comic. My sister and I read straight through it and could not stop laughing! It's fabulous! I really hope you decide to continue it!! Love

I am happy you are making the most awesome comic ever, FF6 ^_^ though I do not understand the numbers of some pages, it looks like some are missing because I did not find them in search ^^; but even without them it is very awesome ^^

hey there, I was just thinking about you (I'm replaying FF6 and went "say, whatever happened to...") and went to find the old site is basically gone? Do you think you'll ever restart it? Sorry if you're tired of hearing/answering this question, I just didn't see it anywhere else on the journal so I thought I'd ask.

Glad to see you're still doing comics and other art. Very funny 8 pager. I love the wordless ones, the pictures tell it all. Hope life is treating you well and keep doing what makes you happy :-)

I want you to do something for me, please?

Go look at your comics from Chapter 1.

Now look at the stuff you're making today.

Feels nice to improve a ton, right?  That's why you've earned a watch from me.  I'm rather blown away by the improvement you've shown.

(Oh, and FFVI kind of happens to be my favorite game of all time, but that's not important right now (Actually, scratch that.  FFVI is always important.))

Thanks for the watch. Yes, it is always good for artists to look back at their old stuff, if only to see how far they've come. I hope you keep drawing and improving, and I'll do the same. :)
